The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland is a world-class Centre of Excellence in education and advanced fisheries and marine technology. The mandate of the Marine Institute encompasses education and training, applied research, and technology transfer. The Institute offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, one-year advanced diplomas, two and three year diplomas, certificate and vocational programs, and a wide range of short courses, industrial response programs and workshops. Developing, applying, and transforming new technology initiatives to support the fishery and other marine industries is one of the Marine Institute’s major responsibilities. In addition to providing comprehensive education and training programs, the Institute supports industry through its participation in research and development, technology transfer, and public policy advocacy initiatives. Industrial response at the Marine Institute functions as a link between the institute and industry. The Institute has a number of specialized centres and units, including the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC), the Safety and Emergency Response (SERT) Centre, the Centre of Marine Simulation (CMS), the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (C-ASD), the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (C-SAR), and MI International. These areas lead the Institute, both nationally and internationally, in applied research and technology transfer and in the provision of training to a variety of industry clients. The Marine Institute is one of only five public educations institutions in Canada to achieve ISO 9001 certification. The International Organization for Standardization rating is a voluntary, globally recognized standard for organizations committed to providing quality products and services that are efficient, consistent and continuously improving. The Institute’s certification applies to the design, development, and provision of education and training, industrial and applied research, and industrial assistance for the fisheries and marine related industries provincially, nationally, and internationally. The Marine Institute achieved ISO 9001 registration in October 2001 and has continued to maintain that Standard by upgrading to the ISO 9001:2000 version of the Standard in the Fall of 2003.
